Reston has grown from a well-planned dream of its founder, Robert Simon, into the most diverse community in Northern Virginia, one which combines the state’s largest employment base with an assortment of housing and life styles unmatched in the D.C. metropolitan area.

Reston has been developed over the past 40 years by following a strict set of “guiding principles” which stress quality of life. The goal is to create an environment in which people can live, work, and play in their own neighborhoods, with common grounds and scenic beauty. Another major goal has been to allow residents to remain in the community while going through different life cycles with different housing needs as they age.

The quality of life in Reston, combined with its excellent location, has created strong business growth which continues apace. Careful planning and zoning has created a community known for its wooded areas, large parks, picturesque streams, two quality golf courses, four lakes, tennis courts, 20 community pools, bridle paths, and extensive walking paths/bike trails. Reston has been carved out of wooded areas of sycamore, maple, oak, and Virginia pine, and is one of only a handful of communities in the United States designated as a backyard wildlife habitat.

Reston has five village centers and one town center. Great care as been taken to preserve open space, even in areas allowing for higher density.

Reston is known as a cultural center, with regular free concerts held at both Lake Anne and the Reston Town Center. A special tax district was developed to form the Reston Community Center, which is highlighted by a theater, indoor heated pool, ballroom, meeting rooms, and regularly scheduled adult education classes.

With the addition of the Reston Town Center, Reston has connected all the dots in becoming the quintessential “new urban community”. Even within this “new urbanism”, the Reston goals of high quality of life for residents prevails. Almost all buildings are oriented away from main streets, and pedestrain traffic flow is encouraged. The major business centers in Reston read like a who’s who of Fortune 500 companies, in addition to being a haven for fledgling smaller companies in the high tech and telecom arenas.

A major rail/subway line, the Silver Line, is under construction which will pass through Reston in an unobtrusive, yet convenient, way. This will link Dulles Airport to downtown Washington, D.C., making an already convenient location even more so.

HERNDON PROPERTIES

Herndon is another town with strong historical background, and tremendous employment growth. Located at the northern most point in Fairfax County, adjacent to Reston, Reston-Herndon are sometimes discussed in the same breadth. The Reston-Herndon area is the largest employment growth center in Northern Virginia, and with the coming of MetroRail, this area is likely to be strong in the coming decades as well.
